Matunga:Mudho Khotto & more...
P.Ramalingam:Coimbatore Butter Stores. The only place I could imagine seeing this board would be some temple street in Tamilnadu. Much to my astonishment I found this tiny shop in Mumbai. Matunga to be more accurate.
Matunga has the highest density of southies in Mumbai. its like how Goregaon is full of as a Maharashtra minister said 'chaiwallas' and 'doodhwallas'. Some of the streets in Matunga are ripped right out of some rural tam or gult village. You will find people happily speaking in vernacular. As if to justify the temple street image most of the streets actually have temples.
Ranga Nayaks Idli Center(Matunga)
->sambar wasted will be charged extra
->all special idlis are served single
->student flash your I-cards for discounts
These are some of the signs that catch your attention as you squeeze into this tiny shop and wait so that you can lay your hands on these delicious idlis.
[Def: idli white, round, boring. this are the commonly associated adjectives with an idli]
Who could imagine that this plain old idli had so many yummy cousins?

Mudho: direct from Karnataka this oblong idli is served in a banana leaf. It looks like a roll. With coconut chutney, oil and curry powder the most amazing idli I have ever eaten.

Not satisfied with the mudho try the next one

khotto :
This cubish idli is also served in some leaf. It is softer than the mudho and melts even faster.
After this I had the plain old idli... then came the masala idli...

After all this bloated like a pig on idlis and sambar I finished this sumptuous idli spread with atypical Karnataka beeda (betel leaf filled with nut powder and coconut)

This was my day out in Matunga...
