PETH(1550 ft)

Even after waking up everyone involved inevitably every trek I go gets delayed. This Sunday made plans to trek up the Nakhind range in the Sahayadris(chain of hills in western India). We drove down to Karjat in Manas’s Maruti Swift and Kalra’s Gypsy King. On the way after grabbing some breakfast at McD we reached Karjat to realize that none of us knew where the trek started. After a couple of wrong directions we ended up at the base of Peth. So we thought what the hell and started climbing up.
The trek itself is very scenic offering some spectacular views. As with most of the monsoon treks it is not a stroll in the park, the trek is physically grueling and the terrain becomes extremely slippery and the sleep slopes offer no protection. It took up about 2.5 hours to get to the base of the ancient fort built by Shivaji. The monsoon winds there were terrific, Literally blew us off. After getting recharged and doing some more dangerous climbing we ended up at the top of the fort. Much to our surprise, we found the winds at the bottom much stronger than on the top. The descent was fairly easy and we got down in good time.

On the way back Kalra’s 4WD broke down and we had to go looking for mechanics and tow trucks in the remote area. Finally after some looking we found a guy who repaired the truck and we were back by about 10pm.

the phenomenon where the winds at a lower level seem stronger than the higher is well known, though i forgot the name. This happens because the air at a higher level is not as dense as the air at a lower level, hence lacking the momentum. So even if the air at the higher level actually blows faster (speed wise) it doesnt feel as 'strong' as the winds in the lower level. This typically happens with the monsoon winds which shed their water at lower levels before getting heated up and rising.
trivia which will helped us find the way in nagarhole on the brahmagiri side, the first time i went there :)

sounds logical. for we couldnt thing of any other reason why there was so much wind on the base and hardly any wind about 100ft higher..
but does 100 ft make tht much of a differnce.
